The first annual California River Fest kicked off Saturday, raising funds for park enhancements and trail projects along the Monongahela River, which stood as a backdrop to the festival located at the end of Wood Street.

Live music played under blue skies while guests enjoyed local food vendors’ wares and kids participated in activities like tie-dying shirts and having their faces painted. A few blocks away, cyclists whizzed by regularly as they made laps around the borough in an Appalachian Bicycle Racing Association all-day competition.

The California River Fest, which benefits the River Town Program, a project of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, was organized by members of the Student Conservation Association (SCA), which matches recent college graduates with internships in fields related to environmental conservation.
