The Mon River has been nominated for 2013 River of the Year in Pennsylvania! If selected as River of the Year, a grant of $10,000 will be awarded to the Brownsville Area Revitalization Corporation (BARC), to be used to facilitate events and paddling trips, in partnership with the Mon River Town Program, to celebrate the Mon and the towns along it. A free commemorative poster celebrating the river will also be created.

The winner will be selected by popular vote; voting is open until January 18th. Please cast your vote for the Mon at www.pawatersheds.org/vote.

River of the Year, a program of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers (POWR), increases public awareness of specific rivers, allowing local groups the opportunity to share their achievements and promote the waterways they work to protect. Pennsylvania’s River of the Year designations have been presented annually since 1983.

The Mon, 128 miles in length, has achieved significant improvements in water quality over the past thirty years, as evidenced by its increased recreational use. Recognition as River of the Year would help raise awareness of the important role the Monongahela River and encourage continued conservation efforts.
