See Fireworks along the Mon Three Days Straight
One can conceivably see fireworks displays for three consecutive days over the next week. The displays – most as part of larger community celebrations – will light up the Mon beginning July 2 and through the Fourth. Do you love fireworks so much that you’re entertaining the idea of a personal Independence Day trifecta? Let us know if you do! Among your options are:
Saturday, July 2
Charleroi, 10 p.m. at 5th and McKean
Sunday, July 3
Fredericktown, 9:30 p.m. at the riverside parking lot
Brownsville (Luzerne Twp.), after dark along the river
Monday, July 4
Monongahela, 9:30 p.m. at the Aquatorium
Morgantown, 10 p.m. at the Hazel Ruby McQuain Riverfront Ampitheatre
A Reason to Celebrate
All of these fireworks are part of larger Independence Day celebrations that mark the Founding Fathers’ vote for independence. See our post on the celebrations for event details (and see here for the Morgantown event).
Looking for something that takes you back to a time of nation-building? Make a side trip to two National Park Service properties in the area. Fort Necessity National Battlefield is the location of the opening action of the French and Indian War, a contributing factor to the Revolutionary War. A lesser known and equally compelling site is Friendship Hill National Historic Site, the home of early American statesman Albert Gallatin. The home was built in 1789, just a few years after Revolutionary War ended. Both sites are celebrating the National Park Service Centennial (Find Your Park) this year and are worth a stop this weekend or anytime.
One of the guiding principals of the Mon River Town Program and the Mon River Valley Coalition is that by working together and supporting neighboring communities, the Mon River Valley will continue to be strengthened. It is always difficult to find the necessary resources in time and money to complete much needed projects. Improving our communities for residents will inspire other investment.
So in that spirit we will post requests from the River Towns reaching out to others in the Valley. The following is a request from North Belle Vernon’s RJ Sokol who has spearheaded the development of the community park. Please consider supporting North Belle Vernon’s efforts, either by attending the fund raising golf outing, sponsoring the outing or by direct contribution to completing the park.
I know many have done so much for us in North Belle Vernon via the park project, but we need this golf outing to be successful on a monetary side……we have done so much and a lot our accomplishments are due to the people of the Mon Valley and their generosity…..We feel slightly embarrassed that we are asking you this, but would you please forward this to all of your members. We need their help and support to finish our park project which will be a total asset for the whole Valley once completed…If any of your members would want to help us establish yet another positive for our Valley, all needed info is below to do so….Sponsorships are $100 or $200 and checks can be made to the NBV Rec Commission….Or, if you members would like to donate a door prize of some sort, they can contact me at 724 929 2749…..
