Locks and Dams
This section of the river is controlled by several locks and dams, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
he Pittsburgh District operates 23 locks and dams on the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio Rivers. Details can be found at this website.
Specifically, the following dams are located on this section of river:
- The Maxwell Dam, located at Mile 61, between Brownsville and Fredericktown.
- The Grey’s Landing Dam, located at Mile 80, between Greensboro and Rices Landing.
- The Point Marion Dam, located at Mile 90.8, between Point Marion and the WV border.
Procedure for Lockage for Canoes and Kayaks
Locking through along the Monongahela River may entail different approaches. Some of the locks do not have floating cylinders as explained in this outlined procedure and instead require ropes from lockmasters. We recommend checking with the Army Corps of Engineers prior to planning a paddle that requires locking through. Remember though the pools of the beautiful Monongahela River offer great paddles without locking through.
